TEAM

“We are a community of mission aligned, out-of-the-box thinkers, ready to support learners in their Green School journey. So they too can thrive with purpose.”

- NIGEL BARRETT, HEAD OF SCHOOL

Founders

Our co-founders Michael and Rachel Perret pulled up their sleeves, adjusted their business hats and cleared the path to form New Zealand’s first and only Green School. What was once dry pastures only five years ago, is now a nourished regenerative landscape with an ever evolving campus and thriving student body. An ongoing source of joy and passion, Green School New Zealand has taken pride positioning amongst the Perrett's past and ongoing business ventures.

Head Of School

Originally from Nelson, Nigel studied at Canterbury University before moving overseas. His two-year trip turned into twenty-five years, during which he worked in various schools across England, Kenya, Borneo, the Philippines, UAE, Uganda, and China. This global exposure provided Nigel with a profound understanding of diverse cultural contexts and educational approaches, while making him fully appreciate being from and having grown up in Aotearoa.

During his time abroad, he completed his Masters in Education and held leadership positions in multiple schools. This included being the Head of Primary in one International school, Founding Head in a bilingual school, and holding senior leadership roles in well established schools in Asia and the UAE.

In developing his educational philosophy, Nigel firmly believes that learning should be childcentered, engaging, relevant, and seamlessly connected to the world around us. As a school leader, he always strives to embody kindness, fairness, optimism, and presentness, while keeping the children’s experiences at the center of decision making and the underlying purpose of education at the forefront. He embraces the concept of community and strongly believes that schools should be a place where everyone can share and learn.

Leadership Team (Primary, Middle & High School)

  • “For me, working at Green School New Zealand is like weaving with two threads. One strand ignites my curiosity and the ever-evolving nature of working at Green School New Zealand challenges me to adapt, grow, change and think outside the box. The thread is textured, multicoloured and invites me to educate in unexpected ways. The other thread encourages me to pause and reflect, to take a moment to breathe and truly connect with our learners, with the people around us and the earth under our bare feet. ”

    - WHAEA CHARLIE, HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

  • "Being a part of Green School New Zealand is a breath of fresh air...literally! The authentic, high quality learning outcomes that I see amongst our youngest learners are a direct result of our supportive community and co-constructed opportunities to take learning beyond our beautiful walls.  I'm thrilled to work for a place that nurtures my love for nature and learning, this is the future of education!"

    - WHAEA KELLY, PRIMARY TEACHER

  • "At Green School New Zealand, it's incredibly exciting to be part of a school that focuses on teaching important life skills like well-being, resilience and collaboration, all through a sustainable lens that supports creative learners to make a positive difference in the world. As an educator, it's both refreshing and personally rewarding to teach in such an environment, and it's one that I believe offers a glimpse into what schools around the world will be like in the future."

    - WHAEA KAT, CO-HEAD OF PRIMARY

  • "I have loved every day of my last two years working at GSNZ! It all begins as you walk down the drive past the bamboo grove and Wetland Walk as you listen to birdsong and gaze up on the dark green Kaitake range. The way teachers interact with learners, engage them through choice and voice, and create meaningful, impactful learning experiences here is like nothing else I’ve experienced in my more than 20 years teaching across three continents."

    - MATUA NICK, CO-HEAD OF PRIMARY
