GSNZ To Host Global Sustainability Event

Sep 19, 2022

An international event that aims to educate and inspire learners to take action in sustainability is coming to Taranaki in March 2024.

Green School New Zealand will be the first school in Oceania to host the Beyond COP21 Symposium, first launched in Dubai in 2016, and since venturing to Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America.

The symposium is a one-day event for intermediate and high school learners to participate in discussions, workshops and presentations stemming from the Paris Climate Accords adopted in 2015, as well as the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals.

GSNZ Head of School, Caroline Rennie, says the school is extremely proud to be hosting a world event that aligns so cohesively with its own values in environmental, economic and social sustainability.

“We are very excited to be the first school in Aotearoa to host and will be reaching out to other schools throughout New Zealand to invite them to join and collaborate with us on this world climate change initiative.”

A number of students from around New Zealand will have the opportunity to attend the event in Ōākura, while aligned local and national businesses will also have a platform to present the steps they are taking to achieve sustainability.

Beyond COP21 founder, Peter Milne, says Green School New Zealand was the ideal choice for the symposium’s first visit to New Zealand.

“I am honoured to be working with such an inspirational school community that puts sustainability at the forefront and heart of education, on a truly breathtaking campus.

“For New Zealand schools attending, it will provide fantastic opportunities to network and collaborate with a community of inspiring local organisations and individuals who are committed to supporting and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals on a more local level, and taking on the climate crisis at the same time.”

Milne says the symposium aims to foster collaboration and action between local and national communities, while also strengthening teacher and student knowledge about what steps can be taken to enhance sustainability on an everyday level.

New Zealand schools and organisations who would like to be involved are encouraged to email their interest to Green School New Zealand at thrivewithpurpose@greenschool.nz.

The final date of the symposium will be announced shortly.
