Our Quest programme is based on the development and execution of a self-motivated passion project, that is the culmination of the Green School New Zealand middle school years. Participation in a group ‘Mini Quest’ is the first step for our Year 9 learners, who will complete their Quest projects later on in the school year. Mini Quest is designed to familiarise learners with the expectations and requirements of Quest, and helps them to understand the process of working towards a finished product.

During Term 1 of 2022, our Year 9s split into two teams. Rose, Jacob, Ava and Jordan decided to build a Bug Hotel and gift it to the school. They came up with a design, sourced materials, and participated in the construction of the frame. Health and safety permission had to be sought, and the team were in communication with Whaea Caroline, Whaea Marg, Matua Tobias and Matua Ross throughout the process. Following this, they designed a workshop to introduce our Year 1-4 learners to the Bug Hotel, before gifting the hotel to the school. During the gifting ceremony, our youngest learners joined Jacob ‘The Bug Man’ for an insect dance before decorating and filling the hotel with loads of interesting natural materials. Ava, Rose and Jacob’s enthusiasm for the project rubbed off and made for such a fun session that has now engaged our entire school community.

Our Bug BnB can be found next to the compost area by the māra kai (food garden) on campus.
